"Oh come on," Sam said, staring at the dog as it snarled at the water's edge. He would have thought that by now Iris would be used to him, but it seemed that the dog hated him even more than ever.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Iris? Crazy dog."

Sam was too busy worrying about the jaws of death that were snapping at him to notice the guy that ran up to grab hold of Iris. He almost never saw Iris without Cassie, but he saw Cassie plenty without the dog, so he assumed someone must look after it, maybe this dude was the one guy that Iris liked that watched her for Cassie sometimes.
